Artist statement

From biographical annotations towards the political and social sphere, Luís Miguel De Matos work is an invitation: to reflect on the systems of values we adopt in specific circumstances, and to challenge our frames of reference.
Influenced by mythological stories, folklore, art history and the tradition of painting he aims to create visual narratives that are informed by context, but relate to universal qualities, such as empathy, measurement, touch, love...
Gradually finding his expression in photography, drawing and installation he set out to achieve the realism of aether -alongside sharing a mysterious view of the magical and wondrous in life- whilst grounding his research in confronting important contemporary problems, e.g. technology misuse, authoritarian structures, moral violence, climate change, etc.

After journeying across Europe, Asia and the Americas, Luís Miguel De Matos intends to portray a world in a fascinating ordered disorder, were stories have redemptive power and are our source of consolation.
